Ola!
Welcome. I would like to tell you a little about Quinta Da Vinha (Quinta means Farm in Portuguese). Firstly as pictures tell a thousand words, above are some revolving pictures of the Quinta, what's on the land, and the surrounding area.
The Quinta sits in a protected reserve 500 metres high in a mountainous area close to mountain range called Pampilhosa da serra. It is in Central Portugal, about 100km from the Spanish border and close to the River Zezere. Here is a satellite link. It is a very beautiful place, unspoilt and peaceful. The Quinta covers an area just under 3 hectares and is about 100 metres below the peak of the hill. Here are some high resolution maps to give you an idea. Map1 shows the Quinta in relation to the river. Map2 shows its size and shape/aspect to the land and Map3 shows the layout of the houses and rooms with measurements in metres.
The Quinta has mostly Medronho bushes and Olive trees. It used to produce 800 litres of Medronho each year. It's a liqueur and works wonders! There is alot of work to do to get the Medronho bushes back to a manageable state. There are about 100 olive trees and all need pruning and the groves cleared from years of neglect. This year due to unusual heavy rains in April the flowers on the Olive trees were knocked off or were unable to be wind pollinated which has consequently affected this years harvest.
There is also plum, fig, apple, avocado, cherry, gratefruit, orange, lemon and grape.
I've placed two beehives on the land. Heather and Eucalyptus are the main source of nectar for the bees. I am pleased to say that Varroa, which is a small mite that is having such a major effect on bee populations in many countries, is not present in the hives. The bee hives are standard British hives. I recently watched my neighbour extract honey from his hives made from cork trees. It was very interesting to watch him at work. The honey is very tasty and the sooner it is eaten before air changes it's makeup, the better.
Finally the Quinta has many Pine and Eucalyptus trees growing, providing habitat to Eagles, woodpeckers, wood pigeons, doves, and many small colourful birds. There is also wild boar which I have heard at night but not yet seen. They sound very powerful!
If you are looking for peace and quiet and want to enjoy and explore the area, this is the place. Incidently, If you are looking at properties to buy I can put you in touch with the local property office.
Fancy experiencing the real Portugal? If you would like to stay at the Quinta I have a double room for €15 a night (€20 for a couple) or there's the Motorhome for €10 a night (€15 for a couple) and an old house for €20 a night (€25 for a couple). If you are brave you can try camping for €5 per night! There is a washroom with hot and cold water, toilet and hot shower. If you are on a budget, travelling by coach from Lisbon to Oleiros the nearest town to the Quinta, will take you about 3 and a half hours and costs only €13.50. I can pick you up at Oleiros no problem. If you would like to be picked up from either Lisbon or Porto airports and avoid driving I will do this for €100.
